So many times in our lives we get knocked down or set back. With every high tends to come a low, but that also means there is another chance to build back up from that low.
From breakups, losing friends while growing up, to failing classes in school, losing jobs we experience so many different forms of setbacks.
We tend to dwell on these negative things too much, they end up controlling our lives and emotions. It’s definitely okay to take time to feel and acknowledge the hurt and pain of the experience, but if we rest in it too long, it starts to consume you from the inside out.
I’ve struggled a lot in my life with the feeling of loss. I’ve experienced my fair share of breakups, I’ve had friends tell me not to be their friend anymore and one of my best friends passed away when I was 21.
Each one of these experiences came with their own set backs and new lows. It’s around these times that I would find myself in the darkest parts of my life. Depression raged, filling my head with thoughts of taking my own life, telling me I wasn’t meant to be here, no one would miss me because they already left me.
It’s extremely important to acknowledge thoughts like these when they come into your head. It’s important to not hide them, to express them to someone you trust. They are true feelings, and you are allowed to have them.
I kept these thoughts inside me for far too long. To the point where I tried to take my own life. For a while I thought I even failed at that because I’m still here today, but I’ve come to realize I am here for a reason. I chose to FIGHT.
Through the lowest points of my life, I chose to fight back. I never knew why I did, but today I do. I fought so I could share my story, my struggles, my feelings with all of you, to inspire you to be real with people. We all have things in life that knock us back, but take that hit, learn from it, and build yourself back up.

Take a moment and think about how much you actually smile during the day. Whether it’s smiling as someone says hello, laughing at a joke or smiling because you thought of something you love.
Children smile an average of 400 times per day. While cheerful adults still smile 40 to 50 times a day, most of us only smile 20 times a day on average. Pretty crazy to see that decline over the years of our lives. Is it the stress of life that gets to us, or are we just generally unhappier as we live?
How often do we just put a smile on our face because we don’t want people to know what’s really going on inside?
So many days when I found myself barely getting out of bed, I found that I could just “tape” a smile to my face, and go about my day, and no one would know anything was ever wrong. I’d hide behind a fake smile and tell everyone I was doing great.
I found music to be such a great tool to be able to express my feelings when I couldn’t show them properly. From the lyrics to the energy behind it, it all makes you feel not alone in the hard times. When it becomes hard to look on the bright side, it feels like you have someone there walking in the darkness with you. I really hope bands know how much their music and art help people.
We’re all hiding behind some form of fake smiles, just trying to hide from the storms of everyday life. What if we all took a moment every day to think about one little thing we are grateful for that day? Seems like it would start your day off with a smile.
Maybe instead of faking that smile with your friends when they ask how you’re doing, you actually let yourself say you're struggling. It’s okay to ask for help. None of us were put on this earth to go through it alone.
When you’re struggling through the storms of life, and it seems like you’re all alone, find the bright side and grab hold as tight as you can.

It’s hard to recognize in the moment when you're facing defeat that you actually are gaining strength. You’re learning something by failing. Gaining knowledge on how to make something better the next time, how to overcome a mental hurdle, or how to push through tough times.
Everything we go through in life has a purpose. There’s a reason you lost your job, a significant other left you, you struggle with depression, or so many other things. While all these things are extremely tough in the moment, they are also giving you the building blocks to become stronger than you once were.
Getting the courage to rise up from the bottom is one of the bravest things I think you can do in life.
As someone who got knocked down to the lowest point in my life, ready to end it, I’ve realized I had to get to that point of weakness to realize I’m so much stronger.
I picked myself back up slowly, piece by piece, put things back together and built a better me. I learned that my head was filled with dark lies, I learned all I could through therapy about the way my brain worked, about how I dealt with loss, how to appropriately manage my emotions, and triggers that could send me spiraling backward.
When I made the choice to get sober, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I would miss all the social aspects, miss the taste, and most of all I was scared people would think I am a loser for no longer drinking at the age of 25.
My strength came from realizing I never wanted to feel that darkness again. I knew I could never go back there, because the next time I would probably not come back. I made a choice to be a better me. I learned to love myself again. To do what I needed to be happy.
We all have pieces in our lives we are trying to pick up and put back together. Find the strength in the brokenness. Pretty sure I was meant to go through things early in my life, because I am meant to be here telling you these stories, and making this art for the next person that needs help picking up the pieces.
